1972 Cane and able
Paris:
After completing a stint at the whisky a go go in Paris, the next band on was CANE AND ABLE.
Gary loved the funk jazz of their music, the singer sounded like Isaac Hayes, so he asked if he could join their band.
Gary joined the group, but they didn't have enough money to pay for a hotel room so Gary used to sleep on top of the Hammond Organ in the van, parked in the street and emerge each morning to use their wash room. The hotel manager in Paris tried to charge them for Gary using their washroom, they gave him such a hiding Gary was sure glad they were his friends, they taught him how to survive.
They toured 6 months non stop, south of France from Menton, Cassis, in the infamous Voom Voom Club in St. Tropez, Cote d'Azur, Marseilles, back to Paris, 8 black musicians and the white hippy at the keys.
Cane and Able also played Montreaux Jazz Festival.
Very exciting times and Gary learnt a lot. It was very sad Gary had to leave, they were close like brothers in the end. Great band before funk became middle of the road disco.
