Biography
Born in Australia
Gary was born on February 26 in Sydney Australia. His parents were separated around the time he was being born. Gary was born with a form of polio and every day his mum would get him to the hospital to get an injection into the bone marrow of his hip.
School
His mum needed to work so Gary went to Katoomba Boarding School in the Blue Mountains, 60 miles by steam-train from Sydney. It took 3 hours because the train had to build up steam to go up the mountains, then to Ashfield school in Sydney from 12 years old. Alone for a lot of the time he discovered every form of emotion and communication was available to him in music. Gary studied Pianoforte at school passing up to 8th grade exams. He heard Little Richard and Jerry Lee and was taken away by the power passion and excitement of their recordings.
He thought: "That's what I want to do."
Hobbies and sport
Gary's hobbies were surfing and tennis. He also wanted to be a professional tennisplayer. Gary always loved speed and he would ride his Billy-cart down a quarter mile Grade 9 hill. No brakes except for his shoes then he would have to spin on the gravel to stop it. Couldn't wait to run up the hill and do it again.
The 60's
Gary helped form his first band The Ramrods at fourteen and they would rehearse at Drummond Scouts Hall. Gary wasn't that well liked, because he would always want to rehearse the band one more time, he became so excited when it all started to get together. They all seemed more interested in their girlfriends at that time. Gary's family were terrified that he might go into the music industry, except for his mum who bought him a neat little piano. It is still there in her house.
Gary bought a little Farfisa organ which he used for his gigs at that time. Used to play the solo from Runaway. Now he looks back it wasn't very close at all. All keyboard players should learn that solo, it's not what you think. The Ramrods, managed by Paul Keating who later became prime minister, were playing Sydney pubs and bars by seventeen and that's where Gary first backed The Bee Gees at the start of their career.
After The Ramrods Gary played in Aeseop Fables who came second in the annual national "Battle of The Bands" competion.
